from 1970 shows a bypass spillway being constructed. The bypass canal ran on the north side

of the locks and in 2012 the spillway could handle 1640 cubic feet of water a second. When



the bypass was first built there was a design flaw and not enough water could come down to



keep the natural flow of the river healthy. At low tide many boats in the lower river sat on

the bottom for hours and many of the natural springs filled up. Today the flow into the lower



Withlacoochee is determined by the amount of water available up stream. You can see the

bypass spillway east of Inglis on Hwy 40E, turning at the South Levy Recreation Park Rd and



following it to the end. The bubbling water is a great place to bank fish. History research by
