Jobless rate drops under 7 percent
Remembering the Past
The unemployment rate in the Workforce Connection region was 6.8 percent in
December, down 0.4 percentage points over the month and 2.1 percent lower than the same
time last year. Out of a labor force of 205,883, there were 13,967 unemployed, a drop of 910
over the month and 4,417 fewer than December 2012.
Workforce Connection CEO Rusty Skinner said that, on the face of it, "numerically
the numbers look good," but the drop in the unemployment rate is due to compression of the
labor force across the region, which fell by 1,108. At the same time, the number of employed
also fell in Citrus and Levy counties and remained virtually unchanged in Marion County.
"The numbers have fallen because people left the labor force, likely because they are dis-
couraged, and that s of concern because of the reason," Skinner said.
The December 2013 unemployment rates, released today by the Florida Depart-
ment of Economic Opportunity, were 6.8 percent for Marion County, the lowest since May
2008 when the rate was also 6.8 percent; 6.8 percent for Citrus County, the lowest since it
hit 6.7 percent in January 2008; and 6.8 percent in Levy County, the lowest since its 7 per-
cent rate in June 2008. Local rates are not seasonally adjusted. Florida s seasonally adjusted
rate is 6.2 percent and the non-adjusted rate is 5.9 percent; the national rate, adjusted, is 6.7
percent and non-adjusted is 6.5 percent.
Rebecca Rust, DEO s chief economist, said that over the year all 67 counties had
declines in their unemployment rates and over the month, 66 counties had rate drops and one
remained unchanged.
Rust said that severe weather could impact employment numbers but that there is
"generally a lot of optimism for 2014 due to less fiscal drag related to taxes and government
spending, stock prices are up, net worth and home prices are up, debt burden is down."
