expected to rise in the 50s by Thursday. USFWS staff will continue to monitor the springs
on a daily basis to make reasonable determinations as in when the springs would reopen
to in-water public access. Based on the weather prognostic for the week, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service may keep Three Sisters Springs closed until Thursday morning. "It is
not only low temperatures that may trigger a closure of the springs", said Andrew Gude,
Refuge Manager. "High tides are directly correlated to large numbers of manatees in the
interior of the springs, which sometimes leads to low visibility in the water. Adding visitors
to such large numbers of manatees coupled with poor visibility makes any recreational ac-
tivity inside unsuitable and would only serve to disturb resting manatees", added Andrew.
The high manatee activity at the springs may be witnessed from the boardwalk
which is open to shuttled visitors. "The best time to enjoy this phenomenal aggregation
of manatees is during high tides", said Ivan Vicente, Visitor Services Specialist for Three
Sisters Springs. "Most manatees come to the springs to rest, but visitors can also witness
manatee cavorting activity from the boardwalk", added Vicente.
