MLK, Jr. Day Annual Unity Walk in Inverness
Citizens and Citrus County public figures alike gathered at Liberty Park in In-
verness on Monday morning, Jan. 18 - National Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - to remem-
ber and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the annual Unity Walk.
Walkers embraced the sunny, chilly day which began with a pre-walk ceremony.
The opening speaker was Dr. Douglas Alexander, Sr. of The Church Without Walls. Fol-
lowing Dr. Alexander was Sydney Smith, who sang "God Bless America," and Nicholas
Owens, who recited the poem, "His Dream Lives On." Reflections on the life and legacy
of Dr. King, the pioneer of the Civil Rights movement, were made by Bob Plaisted, Mayor
of Inverness; Frank DiGiovanni, City Manager of Inverness; Sam Himmel, Superintendent
of Citrus County Schools; and citizens Phil Royal and Dawna Boley. Ending the ceremony
was a poem recited by Sandra Nelson, "Don t Let the Dream Die," and a recitation from Dr.
King s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The ceremony ended with a prayer.
