Daniel Lee Allen, 81 - Inglis
Daniel Lee Allen, 81, born in Inglis Florida December 19, 1929
passed on January 7, 2011. Dan joined his parents, former longtime Inglis
Mayor Dewey D Allen and former longtime Inglis Postmaster Vivian C Al-
len in their final resting place on Hickory Island.
Bypassing his dad’s career of politics and real estate, after Dan’s
first job delivering newspapers in Inglis, Dan went on to make use of his deep
fascinating voice at WRUF Radio Station while attending the University of
Florida at Gainesville, graduating with a degree in Communications.
Dan joined the US Air Force as a pilot and a first LT. from 1951 to 1956. Returning to home
and Inglis, the lure of Europe caught Dan and he became an award winning foreign correspon-
dent with Armed Forces Network (AFN Europe) and worked 16 years in Frankfort Germany
and London England. Returning to the states and Chicago Dan worked as a show producer for
CBS and ABC News then on to Washington DC where he worked for WJLA.-TV.
The thoughts of hometown brought Dan and Guenther back to Inglis where they
built a home on the Withlacoochee River across from his parents home. Their home was
always filled with family and friends sharing dinners, music, old family travel videos, good
times and laughter. The Allen family had years ago bought the old Hodges homestead on
Hickory Island which was an alternate place for entertaining the many friends and family.
Even though Hickory Island has new owners, it is at this place that the old wrought iron
gated Hodges cemetery had space for the Allen family to be laid to rest and Dan finally
joined his beloved parents.
Dan is survived by his younger sisters, Dorothy L Allen and Sherry Beth Douglas
(Brent) of Kernersville NC, niece Patricia Canady of Myrtle Beach SC and lifetime com-
panion Guenter Mewes.
