operation, “we are just about at a break even point”.
But if people donate the materials, why shouldn t they get paid for them? In fact,
we either have to pay for the pick-up or spend our own time and gas to deliver the recycla-
bles to the dumpsters. Seems like we should get something out of that deal. Yes, you could
get paid for your own recyclables if you want to gather them up into the tons worth and then
haul them to another collection site (Tampa or Jacksonville) and get paid the commodity
price for those tons of materials. December spot price for polypropylene was $.03/lb. or $60
for a ton. So if an empty plastic soda bottle weighs 7oz, you would need to collect and store
and haul about 4000 bottles to make that $60.00. Drink up!
Or you can donate those materials along with all your neighbors and let a private
enterprise company do the sorting and hauling for you. In the process, they will employ
about 30 county residents with a living wage and divert the recyclables from filling up the
county landfill and thus causing the need to spend tax revenue to dispose of otherwise valu-
able recyclables… like your empty soda bottles.
Hey but what about the fact that we pay to have the stuff hauled off? Well, you pay
for trash service anyway. Soon, F.D.S. will have curbside recycling throughout the county.
Currently in Sugarmill Woods, the folks there have replaced one of two garbage pickup days
with one recycle and one garbage pickup with no additional cost. F.D.S. has just spent an
additional $60K to purchase curbside recycle containers as they bring more people around
the county to recycling rather than straight garbage service.
Here in Citrus County, the partnership between the public and private sector to
combat the issue of landfill use was a cooperative effort that is working beautifully. In this
article, the efforts of the private sector are highlighted. Equally important are the efforts of
