Grow House  - Continued from page 1
Remembering the past
growing areas, the master bedroom, the master bedroom closet and the master bathroom.
The growing operation was hydroponic, meaning that the cannabis plants were being grown
in a water environment, not in soil.
William Francis Berry, Jr., 49, was arrested on a charge of cultivation of mari-
juana. Berry lived in the other side of the residence, away from the growing areas. He was
not stealing electricity to power the elaborate grow house operation which included cooled
lighting, pvc piping, ballasts, mylar boards, fertilizers, fans, pots and electronically con-
trolled watering.
Berry walked detectives through his operation, explaining how it works. He said
he’s been growing marijuana since last October and does not yield a large amount of mari-
juana in his operation, which was dismantled by the Tactical Impact Unit.
The Florida Power Hydro Plant in 1955 was located today just north of where the main spill-
way and dam sits today. This was well before the barge canal was dug and all the water from
Lake Rousseau, Rainbow River and theWithlacoochee River flowed through this hydro plant op-
erated by P D Nichols who lived nearby. His son still lives in the home. You could reach the dam
from the south like today but back then the canal and lock were not there and there was a dirt
road that traveled south from Hwy 40 where the South Levy Recreation Park is and meandered
through the woods to the north banks of theWithlacoochee River. Back then it was the favorite
swimming hole complete with rope swings out over the river. The new Withlacoochee Bay Trail
runs through these beautiful old woods. Photo from Fl State Archives, history by Sally Price.
