A Night At The
"Hillbilly Hilton"
With Doug Johnston
When we travel a
certain stretch of highway in
West-By-God Virginia every
year we have a memory that
makes us chuckle-now.
Years ago we were
on our way to Hazleton,
W.Va. and were planning on stopping
about 6PM in Wytheville, Virginia to
spend the night. That leaves about 4 1/2
hours to our destination and we would be
fresh when we arrived at Kathie’s Mom’s
house. Wytheville is at the junction of two
Interstate Highways and there are plenty of
motels, except on this evening they were
all full.
We decided to drive on to Princ-
eton W. Va. and ditto: they were all full.
“Never mind”, I said to my increasingly ir-
ritated wife, “Beckley is an hour away and
I know we will find something there”. I
was mistaken. Motel after motel displayed
