Freckles "Inglis Town Dog" Dies
Pet Patrol
Special to The Newscaster By: Ruth Ruppert
Only a privileged few were allowed to touch him for a few
seconds until close to the end. The folks at the Dollar Store called him
“Boy”; the folks at the Post Office called him “Freckles”; some folks
called him “Buddy”; some called him “Town Dog”; the dog catcher had
his own terms for him – maybe “elusive” would be best. He remained
elusive for at least 3 years and even up until his last day.

both ways when he crossed U.S. Hwy 19 – he wandered town like a minstrel man – he had
his own daily routine... he was like a pan-handler on four legs. People would come out of
the Food Ranch with entire packs of hot dogs to give him. He wasn t mean, but somebody
must ve been really mean to him when he was younger.
No one could get close enough to render him aid – when his leg was hurt or when
he needed ticks removed, or to be tested for heart worms. Many people would give the Post

He did get wormed, but ultimately, we think it was either heart worms or tick fever
that did him in. He passed peacefully at the Post Office in the shade on the afternoon of
