Two killed in Lecanto crash
Remembering the Past
and crash in Lecanto, Monday evening, July 27, took the life of two
five seriously injured
A two-vehicle
people when the vehicle went into the oncoming traffic lane and crashed with another ve-
hicle.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occured on W. Grover Cleve-
land Blvd. at CR-491 at 4:40 pm, as Kayla K. Wood, 22, of Inverness, was driving a 2008
Suzuki Aerio, traveling east on W. Grover Cleveland Blvd., west of CR-491. At the same
time, Senecia Werling, 15, of Lecanto, was driving a 2012 Toyota Prius, traveling west (in
the opposite direction) on W. Grover Cleveland Blvd.
For an unknown reason, the Suzuki, driven by Wood, traveled out of the eastbound
lane and entered the westbound lane - into the path of the Pruis driven by Werling. As a
result, the front of Prius struck the passenger side of the Suzuki. After the impact, both ve-
hicles traveled to the north shoulder of the road and came to final rest.
Both adult occupants of the Suzukui - Wood and her front seat passenger, a 22
year-old male of Ocala whose name has not been released pending notification of next of
kin - sustained fatal injuries and expired at the scene of the crash. Neither Wood or her adult
passenger were wearing seatbelts. They were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.
A 3 year-old rear seat passenger, 3 year-old Laveah Atkins, of Inverness, was harnessed into
a child restraint. She was transported to Shands Hospital in Gainesville with serious injuries.
Of the five occupants in the Prius, only the driver was wearing a seatbelt. All suf-
fered serious injuries and were transported to various ares hospitals: Senecia Werling, the
