CCSO charged with attempted murder
A Homosassa man accused of battering his wife and holding a Citrus County Sher-
iff s Office SWAT team at bay on July 11 and 12 was arrested after his
release from a local hospital on July 22. Joachim "Jack" Schulz, 70,
was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery on a person 65
or older, felony domestic battery, aggravated assault with intent com-
mit a felony and shooting inside a residence. Schulz was hospitalized
after the incident due to inhaling the tear gas that was instilled into his
residence law enforcement to flush him out.
The original incident report stated that numerous firearms
were inside the residence. The arrest report stated that Schult premedi-
tated the crime to affect the death of his 72 year-old wife, Roberta, that
Schulz
he threw her onto the ground, beat her about the head and face with
his hands, choked her “multiple times,” jumped on her abdomen and chest, hit her with a
firearm and discharged the firearm, twice, at her feet.
The incident started on July 11, between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., according to the
report, when Schulz returned from a neighbor’s home in the Green Acres neighborhood
of Homosassa, where he drank whisky and soda and took “excessive medication.” Shulz
looked for the combination to his two safes, could not find them, and blamed his wife.
They got into an argument, and Shulz became violent. The report stated,
at one point, Shulz pointed the gun at his wife and dared her to call 911. She managed to
open a bathroom window and screamed. Schulz told his wife that she would not need any
help because she was going to die, that he was going to kill her, then himself. Mrs. Schulz
eventually passed out, later awakened and managed to crawl and slide out of the home to
seek safety at her daughter’s home.
Deputies arrived at the residence, but Schulz had barricaded himself inside and
refused to surrender. Negotiations with Schulz were attempted until around 6:00 a.m. when
he was removed from the residence by deputies after the tear gas and transported to Seven
Rivers Regional Medical Center in Crystal River.
