Unemployement Rise  - Continued from page 1
Remembering the Past
were in double-digits.
CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion CEO Rusty Skinner said the rise in the May rate
is not unexpected. "We typically begin seeing this sort of seasonal increase in unemploy-
ment numbers as we head into the summer," he said, adding that the "summer spike" starts
when spring terms end with college students returning to the area looking for work until the
fall. Skinner said the fact that, regionally, the labor force expanded over-the-month by 2,065
compared to April and the number of employed rose from 187,489 to 189,554.
"That s what we would hope to see in this situation," he said. "Levy County was
the only county to experience a very slight decrease in the number of employed; if we saw
the labor force shrink across the board and the number of employed drop appreciably, that
would cause us to believe the change in the unemployment rate was more than just season-
al." In addition to the influx of college students seeking employment, seasonal declines in
employment reflected statewide included public and private universities/colleges and tour-
ism, according to Becky Rust, Florida s chief economist. She said that agriculture was also
trending down in central and south Florida.
The May unemployment rates for each county in the region, which are not sea-
sonally adjusted, were 7.0 percent for Marion County, up 0.4 percent over the month, the
15th highest rate in the state but the county s lowest since June 2008 when the rate was 7.6
percent; 7.4 percent for Citrus County, up 0.5 percent over the month and the lowest since
7.0 percent in May 2008; and 6.9 percent in Levy County, also up 0.5 percentage points and
the lowest since its 7.0 percent rate in June 2008. Florida s seasonally adjusted rate is 6.3
percent and the non-adjusted rate is 6.1 percent. The national rate, adjusted, is 6.3 percent
and non-adjusted is 6.1 percent.
July 4,1976 the nation was celebrating it's 200th birthday. Locally the Town of Yankeetown
Shrimp Landing
did their own celebrating this highly important event on July 5, 1976. Their was a lot of food,
fun and "carrying on". It was a treat for Yankeetown councilman Jim Townsend to be in charge
of the rowdy folks you could have put in stocks in the town center in front of Izaak Walton
48 Hwy. 19 S. at Hickory Island
Lodge. Long time Mayor Gene Knotts got caught up in the fun and spent his time "arrested".
