Deputies save 4 year-old drowning
Remembering the Past
victim in Crystal River
Just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4th, the Citrus County Sheriff s Office
received a call for help due to a child drowning at a home in Crystal River. When deputies
arrived, they found a lifeless 4 year-old boy who had drowned in a swimming pool.
Deputy Jimmy Sudlow was the first on scene and immediately began life saving
efforts. Deputy Joshua Barr joined Deputy Sudlow in attempting to resuscitate he boy. De-
putes Roscoe Watts and Michael Laborda and Sergeant Stephen Conley provided assistance
in communicating with the dispatch center and bringing first aid equipment. Due to the
quick actions of these five law enforcement officers, the child s life was saved.
"As a parent and a law enforcement officer these are the worst calls to hear dis-
patched," said Sgt. Conley. "I truly believe that our deputies' actions saved the life of this
child."
As Nature Coast EMS arrived on scene, the child gasped, started coughing and
breathing. The deputies assisted in getting the child into the ambulance where the paramed-
ics took over rendering aid, and tending to the child s needs. Before the ambulance had even
left the scene, the child was breathing better and crying. The boy was flown to All Children s
Hospital in St. Petersburg where he stayed the night and was evaluated by the doctors. The
boy fared well, made a full recovery and returned home on July 6.
"We couldn t ask for a happier ending to a potentially tragic situation," said Sheriff
Jeff Dawsy. "I am very proud of what all those involved accomplished today. It is not often  Early families in the south made a living from our natural resources. Pine forest were plenti-
