cepted there but there are conditions. Residents, for example, must stay at that shelter.
Caging is available for dogs and cats; however avian pet owners must provide caging for
their birds. All animals must be up-to-date with their county license and rabies vaccination.
Also recommended are DHPP for dogs and FVRCP for cats. Residents must bring that in-
formation with them.
In addition to the requirement of staying at the Lecanto Primary shelter for their
pets to be housed there, residents will be solely responsible for their pet while it is at the
shelter. Walking, feeding, and general care are the responsibility of the owner. The pet will
not be sleeping in the same room the owners, but it will only be a hallway away.
Registration forms for the Pet Friendly Shelter are available at Citrus County Animal Ser-
vices. "Have a plan in place for evacuations," Amon said. "Planning and preparation

Rock Crusher Canyon in Crystal River is known today for music but the majestic pit was a draw
for other things in days past. Starting out as a mining operation, the pit (canyon) was dug and
made a living for a lot of people when limestone mining was in it's hay day. After the mine
closed the steep walls attracted amateur rock climbers. The beautiful aqua waters attracted
swimmers and the desolate area attracted many partying crowds. Several lives ended there.
Shrimp Landing
An underground hall way from the pit to Rock Crusher Road was a shelter for many when hur-
ricanes occured. In the mid seventies outer space projects were coming to a high and the can-
yon was closed to the public and became a project for U S telephones connected to satellites.
48 Hwy. 19 S. at Hickory Island
General Telephone Electronics Satellite Corporation put up these huge dishes. Phased out, the
area became an RV park, and amphitheater it is today. History by Sally Price.
