There is a very
interesting experiment that
might just give you a sur-
prise if you should want
to try it. It’s really simple:
get a stopwatch and tell
someone that when one minute has gone
by they say, “stop”. Choose an older
person, and then choose a young person.
After you click the start button, don’t
say anything that would give them an
indication of how much time has elapsed.
You will find the difference in percep-
tion between old and young fascinating.
It turns out that feeling like
time flies by as we get older is more
than just an old wives tale; there is
some scientific evidence that it is actu-
ally a fact. When you do the stopwatch
test, older people will usually tell you to
stop way short of a minute, and young
people will stop the clock at more of a
minute or even longer. The perception
that time goes by faster as we age is true.
There is a huge complicated
theory about why this is the case, which
is far beyond the scope of this column.
The technical name is called, “The Loga-
