Publix (Crystal River). From Publix, bicyclists took over and headed east on Hwy. 44, about
10 miles, to the Beall's department store in Inverness. From Beall's, runners joined back in
and continued east, about 4 miles on Hwy. 44, with a brief stop at the Publix grocery store in
Inverness. From there, they continued on to finish the event at the steps of the Citrus County
Sheriff s Office, Operations Building.
Annually, more than 85,000 law enforcement officers participate in the torch run
throughout all 50 U.S. states, 12 Canadian provinces and 46 nations. This event raised more
than $51 million for local Special Olympics programs in 2014 and over $560 million since
its inception in 1981 by Wichita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon. The event was
soon adopted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
