Yankeetown man killed
in crash with truck
A two-vehicle crash in Cross City, Feb. 26, resulted in the death of 51 year-old
Gregory Smith of Yankeetown. The crash occurred at 12:30 am at the intersection of U.S.
Hwy. 19 and County Rd. 358.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Mr. Smith was driving a 1998 Chevrolet
S-10 truck, traveling east on County Rd. 358, approaching Hwy. 19. The second vehicle, a
2006 tractor/trailer rig driven by 53 year-old Joseph Burnett, Jr., of Cross City, was traveling
north on Hwy. 19 in the inside lane, approaching County Rd. 358. Mr. Smith s Chevy truck
proceeded onto Hwy. 19, into the path of the tractor/trailer, which struck the Chevy on the
right front with it s right front.
Mr. Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, which
rotated in a clockwise direction and came to rest on the right shoulder of Hwy. 19. He was
pronounced deceased at the scene. The tractor/trailer left the roadway, entered the median
and overturned onto its left side. Mr. Burnett, who was wearing a seatbelt, received minor
injuries, the report stated.
