Levy County Drug Task Force To Get $100k
U.S. Representative Ginny Brown-Waite has announced the University of Florida’s
shellfish aquaculture research programs can expect over $200,000 in new funding. Brown-
Waite secured this funding in the fiscal year 2009 omnibus spending bill. The overall measure
will support numerous Fifth District agriculture, natural resources, infrastructure, and re-
search projects.
$100,000 is also headed to the Levy County Sherriff’s Office Drug Task Force.
These funds will allow the Levy County Task Force to aggressively fight a growing drug
trade in the region and help reduce crime.
“With the economy in a tailspin, we are infusing vital programs and homegrown
industries with the funding necessary to survive,” Rep. Brown-Waite said. “The important
research endeavors will stabilize the local clamming community and Levy County families will
benefit from safer neighborhoods.”
The University of Florida’s clam research program originally began with funds Rep.
Brown-Waite requested in 2006. The research is designed to improve stress resistance of native
clam breeding stocks for better survival in warm water temperatures during summer months.
