to the dean’s office for an interview.
The boy “was extremely honest and forthcoming,” the report stated, and explained
that he had gotten the idea of making the device from some friends at school, and he’d used
his friends and the internet for instructions on making the device. He said that he and the
younger boy had gone to a store to find a couple items needed for making the device, and
they’d gotten a water bottle from a vending machine at the school. He said that he’d placed
the items purchased at the store inside the bottle, then capped the bottle and placed it in the
grassy area between the two schools - with no intent to harm or injure anyone. He said the
items he’d used to make the device were in his backpack at the school. The backpack was
recovered.
The older boy was “extremely apologetic and sincerely regretful,” the report stated.
An interview followed with the younger boy, his mother and a school administrator. The
younger boy corroborated the older boy’s “sequence of events,” the report stated. He said
that he and the older boy had purchased the items used in making the device, then had gone
to the school. He said the older boy had placed the chemicals in the bottle and had then
placed the bottle in the grassy area. He said, after the older boy had placed the chemicals in-
side the bottle, he’d picked up the bottle and noticed it was losing shape due to the expansion
of gases inside the bottle. He said he’d then placed it back on the ground and moved away.
The report stated that the younger boy “was extremely apologetic,” and said that he
and the older boy had learned about making chemical devices through friends. The younger
