Bike Path Extension in "Study Stage"
The possibility of the bike path being extended to the Levy County Park at the
Gulf inYankeetown is in the study stages. New sidewalks on Hwy 19 in Inglis are close to
being a reality. According to Barney Bennette, PE, Department of Transportation, District
2, StrategicIntermodal System Coordinator, Enhancement Coordinator plans are well un-
derway with construction to begin in 2014. Bennette said the project is to build a sidewalk
on SR 55 (US 19/98) from the Withlacoochee River to North Inglis Avenue in front of Food
Ranch Plaza on the west side of the highway. As currently planned, the sidewalk will be on
both sides of Hwy 19 from the river to Highway 40, and on the east side the side walk will
only be done from the river to Hwy 40 E.
Bennette said “we are just now beginning to acquire a design-build firm for the
project, construction is programmed for 2014.”
Representatives from Florida Department of Transportation, Arcadis, Osiris and
Representative Stone’s office met last Thursday with Ruth Ruppert and Ray Phares from
the local Park to Park Bike Path Committee and Inglis Mayor Elect Glenda Kirkland at the
bike path extension sign opposite Anchorage Ave in Yankeetown. Ray Phares, longtime
president of the committee pushing to get the local bike path to completion to the Gulf
keeps the ball rolling and got the officials to meet to discuss the project extension. Many
studies have to be completed and some great hurdles are ahead. If possible to do the project,
the decision has to be made if the road would be widened to accommodate a bike lane or if
