FDOT to award Citrus County $1.5
Pet Patrol
million for road safety improvements
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is awarding Citrus County $1.5 mil-
lion to improve safety conditions on nine roadways at no cost to the County. These funds
are being made available by the Federal Highway Administration to provide low cost safety
improvements at curve locations along Lecanto Highway, Pleasant Grove Road, Citrus Av-
enue, Withlacoochee Trail, Old Floral City Road, Fort Island Trail, Homosassa Trail, Ozello
Trail, and Gobbler Drive (CR 39A). There were 141 curves identified along these roadway
sections that had a high number of run-off-the-road crashes. These crashes constituted 8%
of total crashes and 22% of all fatalities occurring on Citrus County maintained roadways.
The improvements involve the installation of various forms of traffic control de-
vices such as curve warning signs with supplemental solar-powered speed feedback signs
(see second page), chevron signs, and retro-reflective pavement markers along the curve
edge lines. The County has given permission for FDOT to issue the contract to allow their
contractor to work on county roads to implement these modifications.
"Citrus County and FDOT are working together to achieve safety improvements on
the Citrus County roadways. This program shows FDOT and Citrus County's commitment
to safety on our roadways," stated Jeff Rogers, Public Works Director for Citrus County.
