terward.(if applicable) 4. Sign the YTS Red Hot Minutes Challenge log sheet. 5. Make
sure the books are packed up for safe return to school. A reward system for all this read-
ing is included in the program. Red hot reading thermometers are posted in the cafeteria.
When a class raises the "mercury" to 10,000 minutes, students who have logged those
minutes receive a "treat". Every time a class reaches another 10,000 minutes, "treats" are
distributed again! In addition to the incremental rewards, Ruth Rupert and Frieda Gipson
of Spilled Oak Farms have generously donated three trophies, complete with plaques for
engraving, to be awarded at the end of the year. Classes placing First, Second, and Third
in the total number of minutes read during the year will be presented with the trophies and
allowed to keep them in the classroom until the following school year. Ruth and Frieda
have christened our readers at Yankeetown School the YTS reading warriors.
In the pictures below, you will see students carrying the trophies representing the
classes who are currently in First Place (Mrs. Yaw's Kindergarten), Second Place (Mrs.
Valentine's Third Grade) and Third Place (Mrs. Carson's Fourth Grade). The students in
these classes (who recorded Red Hot Reading Minutes) were also awarded YTS reading
warrior camouflaged pencils by Ruth and Frieda. If you have a student at Yankeetown
School and are not familiar with the red hot reading minutes, please ask your child and
start reading!!! If you are already participating, keep up the great work!
