Dying cedar tree to be removed from
Pet Patrol
Historic  tree in front of the Historic Citrus County Court-
Courthouse
The removal of the dying cedar
house in Inverness was scheduled to be done on Feb. 23, weather permitting. There is a plan
to salvage and use the wood in memory of the man who planted the tree.
It was planted by the late former Tax Collector Bob Gilstrap, and it had become
one of the focal points of the grounds. Age, disease and other factors began to affect the tree
in recent years, however, and an arborist determined the tree was dying and needed to be
removed.
The county has retained a tree service to do the work, and the Historical Resources
Advisory Board and the Citrus County Commission directed the staff to find a way to rec-
ognize Gilstrap’s service to the county with wood that can be salvaged from the tree.
So the timber from the tree will be utilized by some local artisans to produce one
or more wooden benches and perhaps some other memorial memorabilia for placement in
county buildings.
When the tree is taken down, the plan is to allow hobbyists who have inquired
about the wood to salvage the leftover branches. They will be put on the side and can be
taken first come, first served for the remainder of the day. No tools will be allowed to be used
