The Super Bowl,
much more than a game...
Surprisingly, the NFL and the athletes
are not the richest beneficiaries of the Super
Bowl game, and the play on the field is not
the entire picture. Sure, players on the win-
ning team each take home $78,000, and each
member of the losing team gets $40,000, but
the biggest take is from merchandise sold at
the game, the online NFL shop, and at retail
stores across the country. The sales record
for such merchandise was set in 1997, at
around $125 million, and sales have been just
below that ever since.
Proceeds from ticket sales were pro-
jected at $57.6 million this year, given a sell-
out crowd of 72,000 and an average ticket
price of $800.
I can remember, just before the 1968 Su-
per Bowl II game, buying a Sears 21 inch con-
