TOWN OFFICIALS

Many are probably in favor of elected town officials getting paid. But this language say’s,
“WE CAN PAY OURSELVES AS MUCH AS WE DECIDE AND THE TAX PAYERS

HAVE NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT.” Hopefully not the intent but, that’s what it says.
 
It can be argued that ORDINANCES require PUBLIC HEARINGS at which tax payers can
voice their dissent or approval. True only to the extent that there will be public hearings and

you have 3 minutes to say what you think.  The public hearing process can and has been

manipulated before. It is not an ADEQUATE safeguard against potential abuse by some

elected officials.


We recommend a NO VOTE on BALLOT QUESTION #4 this time and suggest that the
officials bring it back to us with language that says, in plain English that ALL COMPEN-

BALLOT QUESTION #5…PROHIBITING SWIMMING AT WINDING RIVER PARK.

AN ADVISORY REFERENDUM ONLY.
The town received a petition signed by more than 100 registered voters of Yankeetown. The
petition asked that a question be put on the ballot. The question; Should swimming be al-
lowed by ordinance at Winding River Park or not allowed by ordinance? The petition was
not a vote one way or the other but just asked that the question be put on the ballot for vote.
We are uncertain what ADVISORY REFERENDUM means. This is very odd language
ing to this language does not count. A YES vote would (or should) prohibit swimming at
since a vote of the people is THE VOTE of the people. ADVISORY was not part of the
the park.

language of the petition. It appears that Council is saying they will do what they please
