Manatees Continue to be A Big Draw
for Citrus County Visitors
Many people took part in saving the Three Sisters property and spring which is
managed in partnership with the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, Southwest Florida
Water Management District, City of Crystal River, Friends ofChassahowitzka, Save the
Manatee Club and the FelburnFoundation. A controversy over The Gator Hole and Magno-
lia Springs boardwalk, closed the new western end for the open house until home owners
across the way and officials work out their complaints of visitors looking into their back
yards.
Like many visitors, Citrus County’s manatees are drawn to the area by its weather
and waterways: Colder temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico cause the sea cows to seek out
the area’s comparatively warm, spring-fed rivers, bays and estuaries. This creates North
America’s largest manatee gathering every winter.
“Visitors from around the corner and across the world are coming to see Citrus
PAR-GAS, INC.
County’s iconic manatees up close,” said Marla Chancey, Director of the Citrus County
Visitors & Convention Bureau. She recommends that interested guests come mid-week for
especially uncrowded waterways.
Guests wanting to see manatees from land can head to Ellie Schiller Homosassa
Gas & Electric
Springs Wildlife State Park. There, manatees in a natural spring can be seen from above
on the recently expanded boardwalk, or from a snook’s-eye-view down in the park’s “Fish
Appliances
Bowl” observatory.
