Fort Island Beach remains closed   advi-
Pet Patrol
The Citrus County Environmental Health Department on Wednesday left its
sory from last week in effect for the county beach based on a second set of water samples
for enterococci bacteria.
The county Parks and Recreation Division will continue to post the beach as closed
to swimming until further sampling shows reduced bacterial levels. The next sampling is
Monday, which means the advisory will remain in effect for the Thanksgiving weekend.
The presence of the bacteria in water samples indicates that contact with the water
may pose an increased risk of infectious disease, particularly for susceptible individuals,
according to state standards. The Environmental Health Department had said in an initial
advisory last week about the danger posed by the bacteria that it is not uncommon for lakes,
rivers, and coastal waters to become contaminated with germs from sewage, animal waste
and water runoff following a rainfall. The department had said the beach water would be
tested again this week. After evaluating those results this week, it said on Wednesday the
advisory was being extended.
The results of the next sampling should be available on Dec. 3. For more informa-
tion, call the Citrus County Health Department at 352-527-5283.
