Fire Department Merger – The subject of merging fire departments in the south end
of the county was probably the most important issue on agenda of the YT Town Council
meeting last Monday night. Merger discussions with the three departments, Yankeetown,
Inglis and South Levy, have been ongoing since this summer. Inglis representatives appar-
ently declined to attend the Council meeting but a letter called a position paper was received
shortly before the meeting started. The letter essentially said that Inglis was not interested in
merging. Inglis gave various reasons such as, divergent capabilities in personnel, training,
facilities, cultures and equipment between the individual Fire Rescue operations, the Inglis
citizens already pay an assessment for fire protection, and they did not feel there would be
any significant savings. The letter was not signed by anyone, either from the Inglis Fire
Department or the Inglis Commission. Both Ms. Drew, Levy County Commissioner and
the new Safety Director, Mr. Knowles attended the meeting and made it clear that the deci-
sion was totally up to the municipalities. The Council then had a consensus that we should
explore the County taking over the Yankeetown Fire area. The county has done this in
