SWFWMD Backs Down on
Pet Patrol
Rivers Flow Rate
SWFWMD engineers had planned to recommend a nine percent flow reduction for
the Chassahowitzka River and a three percent reduction in flow for the Homosassa River as
an ongoing conservation effort.
Groups of people from Citrus County car pooled last Tuesday to make the trip to
SWFWMD headquarters in Brooksville to protest. The Chassahowitzka River restoration
group opposed the reduction in rivers water flow because of the effect on native habitat.
When it was all over, the board of governors compromised and agreed to limit the reduc-
tion to no more than 3 percent for both rivers and will re-evaluate its position in six years.
The board instructed its staff to classify Hernando and Citrus counties as an area where
water resources may become critical in the next twenty years, and may need more planning
for cutting back water use. About two hundred people showed up for the meeting.
