Coast to Coast Biker Makes a Stop

Painting Time!
52 year old Nancy Byrd has a goal to see Florida this year by biking the state. She got
the idea while looking at Google Earth and decided since she lives in Florida, why not see it

first hand. This is quite a change from her profession in computer programs, medical billing
software. Nancy rides her Trek Racing Bike "Madone" with a light weight carbon fiber frame.

Nancy set off on her "sunrise to sunset" mission biking Hwy 40 coast to coast at 7
AM Saturday morning when she dipped her back tire in the Atlantic Ocean in New Smyrna

Beach and headed west with a goal of touching her front tire in the Gulf of Mexico in
Yankeetown at sunset. Of her 10 1/2 hour day she biked 7 hours and 12 minutes, averaging

15.7 MPH, traveling 113 miles. Missing the turn on Hwy 40 in Dunnellon and going south over
the overpass cost her the sunset at the end of Hwy 40. Son and daughter in law, David and
Katie follow along doing sight seeing and side trips while mother keeps her feet to the pedals.
At dark she was at Pine Lodge in Inglis and reluctantly settled in to wait for morning and the

end of her journey.
Nancy said she had been reading about John Harrington, a former astronaut, who

was biking from Washington State to the Kennedy Space Center. His goal was to get kids

interested in science. She had emailed Harrington and told him of her plan to bike cross state
and be on the lookout for her as they would pass at some point. Sure enough the highlight of

her trip was when she passed him 7 miles west of Hwy 17 on Hwy 40. Nancy has not been into
this enough to have a website but she said you can Google John Harrington and see her hero
