Three Sinkholes have opened up in
Remembering the Past
Citrus County sinceturn and right lanes of U.S.
July
Early Tues. afternoon, Sept. 29, the northbound right
Hwy. 19 (S. Suncoast Blvd.) in Homosassa were closed due to a hole that opened up in the
road, a possible sinkhole. The hole is just south of the Village Cadillac/Toyota dealership,
located at 2431 S Suncoast Blvd.
Just a week earlier, on Tues. afternoon, Sept. 22, another hole, very much the same
size, opened up on another road in Citrus County, again in Homosassa in the Sugarmill
Woods area, on Jungleplum Ct. W. near the intersection Sycamore Cir. The road was closed
for repairs.
On Thurs., July 23, a much larger sinkhole, large enough to swallow a well drill-
ing truck with an approximated weight of 56-k lbs., opened up at a Pine Ridge residence
off W. Breckenridge Ct. while a new well was be-
ing drilled. The previous well had gone dry which
may have been an early indication that a sinkhole
was lurking underneath the property. No one was
injured, although several people and another drill-
ing truck were on the scene. There was no damage
to the home. A spokesman for the drilling company
said this is only the second sinkhole of that magni-
tude he'd every seen. Photo right: In Homosassa on

From the year 1989 we find Levy County Clerk of Court Doug McKoy swearing in the newly
elected Yankeetown Council members. The oath of office was administered in the Yankeetown
Town Hall to new Councilers Ray Phares and Ed Urban. Tony McClure was sworn in as Yan-

keetown Mayor. McClure, a Vietnam Veteran who lost his legs in Vietnam, lived on Riverside
Drive before moving to Dunnellon to run a Wine and Spirits shop passed on in 2012. Ray
Phares passed away September 25. See Page 11. Remembering those that made great sacri-
