Lend a Hand with a Can - We are beginning to get the Levy County Food Bank off
the ground. They are asking for people to donate canned goods to stock a food supply for
people on hard times. I am beginning to get some distribution sites in Yankeetown. Right
now we have collection boxes at the River Retreat Spa, the YT Library and the Yankeetown
General Store has also agreed to be a collection site. If you would like to volunteer to be a
collection site, please contact town hall. Inglis Town Hall is also coordinating sites.
Totem Pole Tree - You may have noticed the seven foot tree stump in the Children’s

Park. I have gotten several questions and a lot of suggestions concerning the stump. A gi-
ant pine tree was rotten almost all the way through at the bottom causing concern that it may

fall over and hurt someone or damage playground equipment. However the tree is rather
historic. The Yankeetown area once had a thriving turpentine business. Pine trees were
“cat faced” which is a vee shaped slash in the bark. Buckets were then hung under the slash

and pine sap was collected which as I understand it was then used to make turpentine. I
guess it would be similar to the maple syrup industry. This poor tree still bears the scars
of this past operation and we have left the cat faced portion of the tree as an educational

feature. While it has been suggested that we make a totem pole out of it, we have no plans
at this time for that.
Yacht Basin Lights - We often get calls that the Yacht Basin Lights are out. I know
that they have been out for quite a while. This is because they are surprisingly expensive to
fix. They have a special control system for turning the lights on and off which is part of the
problem. With the new budget we are now proceeding with repairs.
Water Rate Change Reminder - I would like to remind everyone that the new water
rates are going into effect this billing cycle, so bills going out on the 1st, will be implement-
ing them. Contact the town hall for information if needed.
Have a Happy Halloween. The election is Tuesday, please vote. Good Night and
Good Luck, Dawn Marie Clary, Mayor of Yankeetown
