The making of a Service Dog
Pet Patrol
by Alesone MacCormack of Chosen2Serve, Inc.
What does it take to get service dog? There are two ways of obtaining a service dog
and both of them require dedication and hard work from you. The first is a
program dog, such as the dogs we of Chosen2Serve, Inc, offer to qualified
disabled recipients. The application, must be approved, then match the right
dog to you, and attend training sessions at the time of pairing and through-
out the dog’s career. The second way is training your own dog, usually
with the help of a trainer and attending obedience classes with your dog.
There are pros and cons to both ways of obtaining a service dog, neither
one is free. Even though the dog has a great personality, the dog might be
“washed out”due to health or behavior issues. Service dogs are medical equipment, you
would not trust a faulty wheelchair to help you, why would you have a service dog that isn’t
able to perform the tasks you need to mitigate your disability? Dogs that are washed out of
our program are placed in loving homes that will care for them as cherished pets, and not
