member agencies. “Please note that the post office food drive is a local county resource,”
said Toto, “not an individual agency resource.”
According to Toto, Feed Citrus County came about after an 18-month process in-
volving 51 area agencies (food banks, churches and organizations) which distribute food
to the needy, including the agency making the complaint. Feedback from the agencies was
considered, along with advice from other successful food distribution agencies, and a col-
lective concensus was to model Feed Citrus County from a successful, existing non-profit
agency in Tampa, Feeding America.
“Feed Citrus County will be the central cog in a countywide solution to end hun-
ger,” said Toto. She anticipates that all county agencies will be welcome to join, should they
choose to participate. “I am certain they will find their access to much-needed food greatly
expanded.”
Toto said the face of hunger in Citrus County has changed, that many people who
once supported hunger-fighting initiatives are now in need of support. One in every six Cit-
rus County residents lives in poverty and faces hunger on a daily basis. Since Jan., 2008, the
county’s unemployment rate has risen from 6.8% to almost 15%.
The We Care Food Pantry feels that a centralized, non-profit food distribution cen-
ter is the solution to this problem. Feed Citrus County, Inc. will safely store and deliver
fresh, frozen, boxed and canned foods to the county’s shelters, food pantries and other emer-
gency food providers - at no cost to those in need of the food.
The land for Feed Citrus County has been donated to the We Care Food Pantry at
Cardinal Ln. in Homosassa, the plans have been drawn, the zoning has been changed to sup-
port the use of the new facility, and now, all that is needed is funding for construction of the
facility. Feed Citrus County, Inc. and the We Care Food Pantry will both be housed at the
Cardinal Ln. site, each in a 7,200 sq. ft. building.

in Yankeetown at the Bird Creek Bridge. The scene in the movie where Elvis picks up the back
