Are Cave Dwellers Primative?
    

When visiting museums we often see di-
oramas of cavemen, humans shown as brutish,
   
hairy ape-men. In fact, people have lived in caves
throughout history; some even live in caves today.

If you visit the town of Coober Pedy in South Aus-
tralia, you will find people living in caves with TV



antennas sticking out. This is an opal mining town,

and the ambient outside air temperature is so high

that some miners choose to live in caves where the

temperature is cooler. Are these miners primitive,


brutish ape-people? Hardly, they were just hot! People assume, based on evolution-
ary ideas, that humans who once lived in caves were primitive brutes.

After the Tower of Babel when people scattered throughout the world, some

sought shelter in caves as they built more permanent homes. In Genesis, Lot lived in
a cave after he fled Sodom. When King Saul was after David, David lived in a cave.

Obadiah hid a hundred prophets in a cave in order to save them from Queen Jezebel.
Elijah himself lived in a cave.

On the island of Malta, in the Mediterranean Sea, the tradition of living
in caves goes back to antiquity. It was written about during the Middle Ages. The
  
writer found the children strong and simply dressed. The adults greeted him. The



women were remarkably good looking. The men worked the fields, tended animals,
 
  


and took the produce to town for sale. The women made cheese and bread. Drinking
 


water was stored in earthen pitchers. The caves were ventilated with shafts and deco-





rated with crosses and holy pictures. Brutish, hairy ape-man? Throughout history
people have chosen to live in caves (including large cave villages still in existence in

China), but this does not mean they were primitive.
 
