"Suicide Guard Rails"
The new guard rails installed on
Hwy 40 E have been the major topic of dis-
cussion everywhere I have gone recently.
If you have not been out Hwy 40 toward
Dunnellon lately, you might want to take a
ride out to know what I am talking about.
South Levy Fire Chief Roger
Crossman stopped me this weekend to
ask my thoughts on the newest Stimulus
money guard rails project. Having been a
volunteer fireman myself back probably 30
years ago in Crossman’s department, then
with Yankeetown Fire Department, I have
personally responded to many wrecks on
Hwy 40 over the years. In our discussion
going back years, Crossman nor I could
recall a wreck that involved a vehicle run-
ning off the road that involved a death in
the areas where the rails are now installed.
As Crossman said, the road edges slope,
the dips skid the car, the car goes off and
slides along even if on it’s roof. I recall one
man who walked away from 3 such wrecks
over the years.
