Single Stream Recycling
A Clear Success
By Mike Moore
Part I
It’s been about a year
since Citrus County converted
from dual stream to single
stream recycling and there is
a only one way to describe
the impact from the change: a win! You
may or may not have noticed those long
green dumpsters around the county being
replaced with smaller square ones. With
those older dumpsters we sorted recy-
clables ourselves; cardboard went in one
hopper, green glass, plastics, phone books
– each had its own place. Now the collec-
tion dumpsters accept all of those things
mixed together and is sorted later and it’s
much easier for us to recycle.
We converted to single stream
recycling with the help of F.D.S. (Florida
Disposal Services) owned by the local
Ray family. They noticed some problems
with the old system and at the suggestion
